Overview

  • Controls sealant depth and functions as an effective bond breaker for durable joints
  • Compatible with cold-applied sealants and many hot-pour sealants when used within temperature limits
  • Soft, compressible polyolefin foam allows easy installation and a tight fit

CRL Sof® Rod (SKU: SR118B) is a dual-celled backer rod—an advanced sealant backing that combines open- and closed-cell features in a continuous extruded polyolefin foam. Its non-absorbent outer skin and resilient internal structure prevent out-gassing when the skin is ruptured, reducing sealant bubbling and failure. Chemically inert, CRL Sof® Rod is compatible with virtually all known cold-applied sealants, including self-leveling types; follow the product temperature limits for hot-pour compatibility.

CRL Sof® Rod is available in diameters from 3/8” to 2” (10 to 51 mm).

Temperature Limits:
-45° to 160°F (-43° to 71°C)

Common Applications:
Glazing, curtain wall construction, partitions, parking decks, bridge construction, modular home gasketing, and log home chinking.

Size Selection:
Choose a backer rod 25–50% oversized relative to the joint width to control sealant depth and act as an effective bond breaker for long-lasting joints.

Storage:
Store in a well-ventilated area out of direct sunlight; keep away from heat sources and open flames.

Joint Preparation:
  • New Joints: Remove form-release agents, curing compounds, and debris. Ensure joints are clean and dry before applying sealant.
  • Repairing Old Joints: Remove all old sealant or filler. Wire brushing and air blasting (with moisture and oil traps) are recommended for effective cleaning.

Installation Instructions:
  1. Prepare the surface following the Joint Preparation directions.
  2. Measure and Select: Choose the correct backer rod size based on joint width.
  3. Set Depth: Install the backer rod to the depth recommended by the sealant manufacturer so the
