Description
Overview
- Easy control of sealant application thickness
- Non-bonding surface – no additional bond breaker required
- Compatible with all cold-applied sealants
CRL Closed Cell Backer Rod (SKU: EF12B) is a round, flexible polyethylene foam with a durable exterior skin designed to control sealant depth and promote proper joint design. This closed-cell backer rod serves as a backing material for elastomeric and other cold-applied sealants, preventing excessive sealant use. Its non-bonding surface keeps sealants from sticking to the backer, allowing movement and flex to reduce stress at adhesion points and improve sealant performance in expansion joints and control joints.
CRL Closed Cell Backer Rod is available in diameters from 1/4" to 2" (7 to 50 mm) for use in curtain walls, precast panels, parking decks, door and window frames, coping, floor and deck joints, horizontal traffic joints, and building rehabilitation projects.
Closed-cell construction will not absorb or wick water to joint walls, reducing risk of adhesive failure. The round profile helps form the preferred "hourglass" sealant shape for long-lasting joint seals.
Temperature Limits:
-45°F to 160°F (-43°C to 71°C)
Application:
Ideal for expansion/control joints and a wide range of construction joints where cold-applied sealants are specified.
Size Selection:
Select a backer rod 25–50% larger than the joint width to ensure a tight, secure fit and to control sealant bead depth.
Storage:
Store in a well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and open flames.
Joint Preparation:
- New Joints: Remove form-release agents, curing compounds, and debris. Ensure joint is clean and dry before sealing.
- Repairing Old Joints: Remove all old sealant or filler. Use wire brushing and air blasting; if using compressed air, include moisture and oil traps.
Installation Instructions:
- Prepare the surface following the Joint Preparation guidance.
- Measure and Select: Choose the correct backer rod size based on joint width.
- Set Depth: Install at the sealant manufacturer’s recommended depth to form an "hourglass" sealant profile.
- Use the Right Tools: Install with a blunt tool or roller. Recommended tools: Cat. No. T607CU605 or Cat. No. SBRR for smooth installation.
Appearance:
Product may come in different shades or tones; color variation does not affect performance.
