Description
Overview
- Easy control of sealant application thickness
- Non-bonding surface – no additional bond breaker required
- Compatible with all cold-applied sealants
SKU: EF14B
CRL Closed Cell Backer Rod is a round, flexible polyethylene foam backer rod with an exterior skin designed to control sealant depth and promote proper joint design. This closed-cell, non-absorbing backer rod serves as a backing material for elastomeric and other cold-applied sealants, preventing excessive sealant use and allowing sealants to move and flex. Use as a non-bonding bond breaker in joints to reduce stress at adhesion points and improve long-term sealant performance.
Available diameters: 1/4" to 2" (7 to 50 mm).
CRL Closed Cell Backer Rod will not absorb or wick water to joint walls, reducing the risk of adhesive failure. Its round shape promotes the preferred "hourglass" sealant profile. Ideal as a polyethylene foam backer rod for expansion joints, curtain walls, window and door frames, precast panels, parking decks, coping, floor and deck joints, horizontal traffic joints and building rehab projects.
Temperature limits: -45°F to 160°F (-43°C to 71°C)
Application: Commonly used in expansion/control joints with cold-applied sealants. Compatible with most cold-applied sealants; do not use with hot-applied sealants or adhesives above 160°F (71°C).
Size selection: Choose a backer rod 25–50% larger than the joint width for a tight fit. Proper sizing controls sealant bead depth and functions as the bond breaker to prevent back-side adhesion.
Storage: Store in a well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight, heat sources and open flames.
Joint preparation:
- New joints: Clean to remove form-release agents, curing compounds and debris. Ensure joints are clean and dry before applying sealant.
- Repairing old joints: Remove old sealant or filler. Clean with wire brushing and air blasting. If using compressed air, use moisture and oil traps.
Installation instructions:
- Prepare the surface per the Joint Preparation directions.
- Measure and select: Choose correct backer rod size based on joint width.
- Set depth: Install at the depth recommended by the sealant manufacturer so the sealant
