Overview

  • Controls sealant depth and functions as an effective bond breaker for caulking and sealing joints
  • Compatible with all cold-applied and most hot-pour sealants (see temperature limits)
  • Soft, compressible material allows easy installation and consistent sealant profiles

CRL Sof® Rod (SKU: SR2B) is a dual-celled backer rod and advanced sealant backing material made from extruded polyolefin foam. With a non-absorbent outer skin and a resilient mix of open and closed cells, it prevents out-gassing that can cause sealant bubbling and failure. Chemically inert, Sof® Rod is compatible with virtually all cold-applied sealants, including self-leveling types—making it ideal as a backer rod for sealants, glazing tape backing, and joint gasketing.

CRL Sof® Rod is available in diameters from 3/8" to 2" (10 to 51 mm).

Temperature limits:
-45° to 160°F (-43° to 71°C)

Common applications:
Glazing, curtain wall construction, partitions, parking decks, bridge joints, modular home gasketing, and log home chinking—use wherever a reliable backer rod for sealants is required.

Size selection:
Select a backer rod approximately 25–50% larger than the joint width to control sealant depth and act as a bond breaker; proper oversize ensures a tight fit and correct hourglass sealant profile.

Storage:
Store in a well-ventilated area. Do not store in direct sunlight. Keep away from heat sources and open flames.

Joint preparation:
  • New joints: Remove form-release agents, curing compounds, and debris. Ensure joints are clean and dry before applying sealant.
  • Repairing old joints: Remove old sealant/filler completely. Use wire brushing and air blasting; if using compressed air, use moisture and oil traps.

Installation instructions:
  1. Prepare the surface following Joint preparation directions.
  2. Measure and select: Choose the correct backer rod size based on joint width.
  3. Set depth: Install the backer rod to the sealant manufacturer's recommended depth so the sealant forms an "hourglass" shape.
  4. Use the right tools: Install with a blunt tool or roller. Recommended tools: Cat. No. T607CU605 or Cat. No. SBRR for smooth installation.
