Overview

  • Controls sealant depth and functions as an effective bond breaker
  • Compatible with all cold-applied and hot-pour sealants
  • Soft polyurethane foam allows for easy compression during installation

CRL Open Cell Backer Rod (SKU: B0CBR78) is a soft, round, highly compressible polyurethane foam backer rod designed to support sealant beads in joints. Its open-cell structure flexes to adapt to irregular or damaged joints and resists damage from dynamic joint movement, making it an ideal open-cell backer rod for sealant joints, including silicone and urethane applications.

CRL Open Cell Backer Rod is available in diameters from 5/8” to 2” (16 to 51 mm).

Unlike closed-cell rods, open-cell construction eliminates the risk of outgassing when punctured, improving adhesion and performance with high-performance sealants. Temperature limits: -60° to +500°F (-15° to +260°C).

Applications:
Best used in vertical and horizontal wall joints. Not recommended for horizontal traffic surfaces such as pavement joints.

Size Selection:
Select a backer rod approximately 50% larger than the joint width to ensure a tight fit. Proper size selection controls sealant depth and acts as a bond breaker to prevent back-side adhesion.

Storage:
Store in a well-ventilated area. Do not store in direct sunlight. Keep away from heat sources and open flames.

Joint Preparation:
  • New Joints: Clean thoroughly to remove form-release agents, curing compounds, or debris. Ensure joints are clean and dry before applying sealant.
  • Repairing Old Joints: Remove all old sealant or filler. Use wire brushing and air blasting for effective cleaning. If using an air compressor, ensure moisture and oil traps are in place.

Installation Instructions:
  1. Prepare the surface by following the Joint Preparation directions.
  2. Measure and Select: Choose the correct backer rod size based on the joint width.
  3. Set Depth: Install the backer rod at the depth recommended by the sealant manufacturer so the sealant forms an "hourglass" shape.
  4. Use the Right Tools: Install with a blunt tool or roller. Use Cat. No. T607CU605 or Cat. No. SBRR for smooth installation.

Color Note:
The product can come in different shades/tones; color variation does not affect performance.

Product Warning:
Not suitable for horizontal traffic joints—use only in vertical and
