Description
Overview
- Easy control of sealant application thickness
- Non-bonding surface — no additional bond breaker required
- Compatible with all cold-applied sealants
CRL Closed Cell Backer Rod (SKU: EF12C) is a round, flexible polyethylene foam backer rod with an exterior skin that controls sealant depth and promotes proper joint design. Use this closed-cell, non-absorbing backer rod as a backing material for elastomeric and other cold-applied sealants to prevent excessive sealant use, reduce adhesion stress, and improve sealant performance.
CRL Closed Cell Backer Rod is available in diameters from 1/4" to 2" (7 to 50 mm).
Because it will not absorb or wick water to joint walls, this polyethylene backer rod reduces the risk of adhesive failure. Its round shape helps create the preferred "hourglass" sealant profile for expansion and control joints.
Temperature Limits:
-45°F to 160°F (-43°C to 71°C)
Typical Applications:
Expansion/control joints with cold-applied sealants including curtain walls, construction partitions, precast panels, parking decks, door and window frames, coping, floor and deck joints, horizontal traffic joints, and building rehabilitation projects.
Size Selection:
Select a backer rod approximately 25–50% wider than the joint to ensure a tight fit and proper sealant depth. Correct sizing controls bead depth and acts as a bond breaker to prevent backside adhesion.
Storage:
Store in a well-ventilated area out of direct sunlight. Keep away from heat sources and open flames.
Joint Preparation:
- New Joints: Remove form-release agents, curing compounds, and debris. Ensure joints are clean and dry before applying sealant.
- Repairing Old Joints: Remove old sealant or filler; use wire brushing and air blasting. If using compressed air, use moisture and oil traps.
Installation Instructions:
- Prepare the surface following the Joint Preparation steps.
- Measure and select the correct backer rod size based on joint width.
- Set depth: Install at the depth recommended by the sealant manufacturer so the sealant forms an "hourglass" shape.
- Use the right tools: Install with a blunt tool or roller. Recommended tools: Cat. No. T607CU605 or Cat. No. SBRR for smooth installation.
Color Variations:
Product shades and tones may vary; color differences do not affect performance.
