Overview
- Controls sealant depth and functions as an effective bond breaker for sealant joints
- Compatible with all cold-applied and hot-pour sealants (not for hot-applied traffic joints)
- Soft, highly compressible material allows for easy compression during installation
CRL Open Cell Backer Rod is a soft, round, highly compressible polyurethane foam designed to back cold-applied sealant joints and compatible hot-pour sealants. Its open-cell structure flexes to adapt to irregular or moving joints and resists damage from dynamic joint movement.
CRL Open Cell Backer Rod is available in diameters from 5/8” to 2” (16 to 51 mm).
Unlike closed-cell rods, open-cell construction eliminates the risk of outgassing when punctured, making this backer rod ideal for high-performance sealants such as silicones and urethanes.
Temperature Limits:
-60° to +500°F (-15° to +260°C)
Recommended Application:
Best used in vertical and horizontal wall joints. Not recommended for horizontal traffic surfaces such as pavement joints.
Size Selection:
Proper size selection is critical: the backer rod controls sealant depth and acts as a bond breaker to prevent back-side adhesion. Select a rod approximately 50% larger than the joint width for a tight, compressive fit.
Storage:
Store in a well-ventilated area out of direct sunlight. Keep away from heat sources and open flames.
Joint Preparation:
- New Joints: Clean thoroughly to remove form-release agents, curing compounds, or debris. Ensure the joint is clean and dry before applying sealant.
- Repairing Old Joints: Remove all old sealant or filler. Use wire brushing and air blasting for effective cleaning. If using an air compressor, ensure it has moisture and oil traps.
Installation Instructions:
- Prepare the surface following the Joint Preparation directions.
- Measure and Select: Choose the correct backer rod size based on joint width.
- Set Depth: Install the backer rod to the depth recommended by the sealant manufacturer so the sealant forms an "hourglass" profile.
- Use the Right Tools: Install with a blunt tool or roller. Use Cat. No
