Description
Overview
- Easy control of sealant application thickness
- Non-bonding surface — no additional bond breaker required
- Compatible with all cold-applied sealants
CRL Closed Cell Backer Rod (SKU: EF114B) is a round, flexible polyethylene foam backer rod with a durable exterior skin that controls sealant depth and promotes proper joint design. Use as a backing for elastomeric and other cold-applied sealants to reduce sealant consumption and improve movement capability. The closed-cell, non-bonding surface prevents adhesion to the joint backside and helps form the preferred "hourglass" sealant profile for improved performance in expansion and control joints.
CRL Closed Cell Backer Rod is available in diameters from 1/4" to 2" (7 to 50 mm).
Closed-cell construction resists water absorption and wicking to joint walls, reducing risk of adhesive failure. Round shape supports hourglass sealant geometry. Ideal for use with cold-applied sealants in curtain walls, construction partitions, precast panels, parking decks, door and window frames, coping, floor and deck joints, horizontal traffic joints, and building rehabilitation projects.
Temperature limits:
-45°F to 160°F (-43°C to 71°C)
Application:
Designed for expansion/control joints and other sealant joint applications where a polyethylene backer rod and non-bonding surface are required.
Size selection:
Select a backer rod 25–50% oversized relative to the joint width to ensure a tight fit and correct sealant depth; proper sizing controls bead depth and functions as a bond breaker.
Storage:
Store in a well-ventilated area out of direct sunlight. Keep away from heat sources and open flames.
Joint preparation:
- New joints: Remove form-release agents, curing compounds, and debris. Ensure joints are clean and dry before sealing.
- Repairing old joints: Remove existing sealant or filler. Clean with wire brushing and air blasting; use moisture- and oil-trapped compressors when applicable.
Installation instructions:
- Prepare the joint per the Joint preparation directions.
- Measure and select: Choose backer rod size based on joint width.
- Set depth: Install to the depth recommended by the sealant manufacturer so the sealant forms an "hourglass" shape.
- Use the right tools: Install with a blunt tool or roller (e.g., Cat. No. T607CU605 or Cat.
