Description
Overview
- Easy control of sealant application thickness
- Non-bonding surface – no additional bond breaker required
- Compatible with all cold-applied sealants
CRL Closed Cell Backer Rod (SKU: EF58C) is a round, flexible polyethylene foam backer rod with a durable exterior skin. Designed for expansion and control joints, this closed-cell backer rod controls sealant depth, prevents excessive sealant use, and promotes the preferred hourglass sealant profile. Its non-bonding surface prevents sealant adhesion to the back of the joint, improving movement capability and extending sealant life.
Available sizes: 1/4" to 2" (7 to 50 mm) diameters.
Key benefits / differentiators: closed-cell polyethylene construction (won’t absorb or wick water), skin surface for consistent installation, compatible with most cold-applied sealants, promotes hourglass sealant shape to reduce stress at adhesion points.
Temperature limits: -45°F to 160°F (-43°C to 71°C).
Common applications: expansion and control joints in curtain walls, precast panels, parking decks, door and window frames, coping, floor and deck joints, horizontal traffic joints, and building rehabilitation projects.
Size selection: Choose a backer rod 25–50% larger than the joint width for a tight, compressive fit so it properly controls sealant depth and acts as a bond breaker.
Storage: Store in a well-ventilated area out of direct sunlight. Keep away from heat sources and open flames.
Joint preparation:
- New joints: Remove form-release agents, curing compounds, and debris. Ensure joints are clean and dry.
- Repairing old joints: Remove old sealant or filler. Use wire brushing and air blasting; if using compressed air, employ moisture and oil traps.
Installation instructions:
- Follow the joint preparation steps above.
- Measure and select the correct backer rod size based on joint width.
- Install the backer rod to the depth recommended by the sealant manufacturer so the sealant forms an hourglass profile.
- Use a blunt tool or roller for installation. Recommended tools: Cat. No. T607CU605 or Cat. No. SBRR for smooth placement.
Warnings: Do not tear, puncture, crease, over-compress or stretch during insertion. Use the correct size for each application. Do not use with hot-applied sealants or hot melt adhesives with surface temperatures above 160°F (71°C). Refer to the size selection chart.
