Description
Overview
- Easy control of sealant application thickness
- Non-bonding surface – no additional bond breaker required
- Compatible with all cold-applied sealants
CRL Closed Cell Backer Rod (SKU: EF2C) is a round, flexible closed-cell polyethylene foam with a durable exterior skin. Designed to control sealant depth and promote proper joint design, this backer rod acts as a bond breaker for elastomeric and other cold-applied sealants, preventing excessive sealant use and improving joint movement and longevity.
CRL Closed Cell Backer Rod is available in diameters from 1/4" to 2" (7 to 50 mm).
Because it does not absorb or wick water, this polyethylene backer rod helps prevent adhesive failure in joints. Its round profile promotes the preferred "hourglass" sealant shape for optimal seal performance. Ideal for expansion and control joints where a non-absorbing, closed-cell bond breaker is required.
Temperature Limits:
-45°F to 160°F (-43°C to 71°C)
Application:
Commonly used with cold-applied sealants in curtain walls, construction partitions, precast panels, parking decks, door and window frames, coping, floor and deck joints, horizontal traffic joints, and building rehabilitation projects.
Size Selection:
Select a backer rod approximately 25–50% larger than the joint width to ensure a tight fit and proper sealant depth control.
Storage:
Store in a well-ventilated area out of direct sunlight. Keep away from heat sources and open flames.
Joint Preparation:
- New Joints: Remove form-release agents, curing compounds, and debris. Ensure joints are clean and dry.
- Repairing Old Joints: Remove old sealant or filler. Clean by wire brushing and air blasting; use moisture and oil traps on air compressors.
Installation Instructions:
- Prepare the joint following the Joint Preparation directions.
- Measure and Select: Choose the correct backer rod size for the joint width.
- Set Depth: Install at the depth recommended by the sealant manufacturer so the sealant forms an "hourglass" profile.
- Use the Right Tools: Install with a blunt tool or roller (Cat. No. T607CU605 or Cat. No. SBRR recommended
