- Controls sealant depth and functions as an effective bond breaker for silicone and polyurethane sealants
- Compatible with cold-applied and many hot-pour sealants; dual-cell design reduces outgassing and sealant bubbling
- Soft, extruded polyolefin foam core with a compressible outer skin allows easy compression during installation
CRL Sof® Rod is a dual-cell backer rod and advanced sealant backing material that combines open- and closed-cell performance in a single extruded polyolefin foam product. The resilient internal structure and non-absorbent outer skin minimize outgassing when the skin is ruptured, helping prevent sealant bubbling and failure. Chemically inert, Sof® Rod is compatible with virtually all known cold-applied sealants, including self-leveling types, making it a reliable choice for glazing and construction sealant applications.
CRL Sof® Rod is available in diameters from 3/8” to 2” (10 to 51 mm).
Temperature Limits: -45° to 160°F (-43° to 71°C)
Application: Commonly used as backer rod in glazing, curtain wall construction, partitions, parking decks, bridge construction, modular home gasketing, and log home chinking. Ideal long-tail use case: "dual-cell backer rod for exterior expansion joints and curtain wall seals."
Size Selection: Select a Sof® Rod slightly oversized (about 25–50% wider than the joint) to ensure a tight fit; proper sizing controls sealant bead depth and prevents back-side adhesion.
Storage: Store in a well-ventilated area out of direct sunlight. Keep away from heat sources and open flames.
Joint Preparation: - New Joints: Clean thoroughly to remove form-release agents, curing compounds, or debris. Ensure the joint is clean and dry before applying sealant.
- Repairing Old Joints: Remove all old sealant or filler. Use wire brushing and air blasting for effective cleaning. If using an air compressor, ensure it has moisture and oil traps.
