- Controls sealant depth and serves as an effective bond breaker
- Compatible with cold-applied and hot-pour sealants (see temperature limits)
- Soft, compressible polyolefin construction for easy installation
CRL Sof® Rod (SKU: SR78B) is a dual-cell polyolefin backer rod engineered as a high-performance sealant backing material. Its non-absorbent outer skin with a resilient internal structure of open and closed cells prevents out-gassing and sealant bubbling while remaining chemically inert and compatible with virtually all cold-applied sealants, including self-leveling types. Ideal for projects requiring a reliable polyolefin backer rod or dual-cell backer rod solution.
CRL Sof® Rod is available in diameters from 3/8” to 2” (10 to 51 mm).
Temperature Limits: -45° to 160°F (-43° to 71°C)
Applications: Backer rod for glazing, curtain wall construction, partitions, parking decks, bridge joints, modular home gasketing, and log home chinking — suitable wherever a durable sealant backing for expansion joints is required.
Size Selection: Oversize the backer rod approximately 25–50% wider than the joint to ensure a tight fit; correct size controls sealant bead depth and prevents back-side adhesion.
Storage: Store in a well-ventilated area out of direct sunlight. Keep away from heat sources and open flames.
Joint Preparation:
- New Joints: Remove form-release agents, curing compounds, and debris. Ensure the joint is clean and dry before applying sealant.
- Repairing Old Joints: Remove old sealant or filler. Use wire brushing and air blasting; if using compressed air, use moisture and oil traps.
Installation Instructions:
- Prepare the surface following the Joint Preparation directions.
- Measure and Select: Choose the correct backer rod size based on joint width.
- Set Depth: Install the backer rod to the sealant manufacturer's recommended depth so the sealant forms an "hourglass" profile.
- Use the Right Tools: Install with a blunt tool or roller. Recommended tools: Cat. No. T607CU605 or Cat. No. SBRR for smooth installation.
