Overview

  • Controls sealant depth and functions as an effective bond breaker
  • Compatible with cold-applied and hot-pour sealants
  • Soft, compressible material for easy installation

CRL Sof® Rod (SKU: SR112C) is a dual-celled sealant backing material that combines the benefits of open- and closed-cell backer rods in one high-performance extruded polyolefin foam. Its resilient internal structure with a non-absorbent outer skin minimizes out-gassing when the skin is ruptured—preventing sealant bubbling and failures. Chemically inert, Sof® Rod is compatible with virtually all known cold-applied sealants, including self-leveling types.

CRL Sof® Rod is available in diameters from 3/8” to 2” (10 to 51 mm).

Temperature limits:
-45° to 160°F (-43° to 71°C)

Applications:
Backer rod for glazing, curtain wall construction, partitions, parking decks, bridge construction, modular home gasketing, and log home chinking.

Size selection:
Choose a backer rod 25–50% oversized relative to the joint width to control sealant depth and ensure a proper bond-breaker function.

Storage:
Store in a well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and open flames.

Joint preparation:
  • New joints: Clean thoroughly to remove form-release agents, curing compounds, and debris. Ensure the joint is clean and dry before applying sealant.
  • Repairing old joints: Remove all old sealant or filler; use wire brushing and air blasting. If using compressed air, use moisture and oil traps.

Installation instructions:
  1. Prepare the surface per Joint preparation directions.
  2. Measure and select: Pick the correct backer rod size based on joint width.
  3. Set depth: Install the backer rod to the depth recommended by the sealant manufacturer so the sealant forms an "hourglass" profile.
  4. Use proper tools: Install with a blunt tool or roller. Recommended tools: Cat. No. T607CU605 or Cat. No. SBRR for smooth
